New page! Our fearless Founder’s over-educated anthropologist side comes out to play here. I’m getting kinda sick of this scene’s color scheme, so it’s good that this part of the story is almost over.

In other news, I discovered today that I’ve done 63 (64 counting this page) pages of comics this year! I basically started drawing comics around this time last year, which is crazy. I think I’ve come a long way since then, and hope I’m even better this time next year. I have a lot of goals for this year, comics-wise.

My plan is called “Let’s Make Money Making Comics Why Don’t We?” Besides the boring stuff like learning how to draw more fluid and less stiff poses, working on action scenes, continuing to work on figure drawing and drawing females, the BIGGEST thing I’m going to be doing this year is trying to write and draw a full graphic novel. MORE ON THAT LATER. I’M EXCITED.

After a trip to Montreal and a weekend of working at a yacht club (from which some comics will be born, I assure you), I have produced a new page!

And I gotta tell you, I love drawing this here monster.

Montreal was pretty cool. I’m a big fan of that city, the weather was beautiful, and I got to hit up the Drawn & Quarterly store to check out some rare import comics. I picked up THE RABBI’S CAT by Joann Sfar, a French cartoonist whose work is beautiful and full of life. He makes great cartooning look easy.

WITNESS THE OUTERFISH.

We’ve finally gotten to the creature in this creature feature! I’m pretty proud of this page. It was the image that I first came up with for this story, and the finished product is almost exactly how I’d wanted it to look in my head. The story is really ramping up, now.

Also, I’m in Montreal right now, so I set this to upload automatically without my even being at a computer. THE FUTURE, MAN. I love Montreal and am excited to wander its streets once more. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to hit up the DRAWN & QUARTERLY store and pick up some rad foreign comics or something.

Anyway, I’m hopefully going to get a good amount of drawing done on this trip, so I’ll have a page for you probably on Friday. Let me know what you think of this here beastie!

Alright so maybe I’m not keeping to my schedule that great. I had no comic on Friday and am posting this on Tuesday.

Anyway, here’s page 3!  Things are heating up, and on the next page things are going to be getting downright MYSTERIOUS.

Also, I’ve added a new feature to the site.  On the top left of the page, under the header, there’s now a dropdown menu where you can easily select and navigate through the comics archive!  Yup!

I thought it would be interesting to show a little bit of comics-making-processy-stuff on this page, so below I’ve posted some images of this page as it traveled from inks to full colors.

Here’s the inked page.  This is what the page looks like when I first bring it into photoshop.  Very bare bones, without even the black spaces filled in (I used to fill those in on the page, which makes for a better looking original page but is also time consuming and ink consuming).  After bringing it into Photoshop, I use a color flatting plugin to essentially fill every empty space on the page with a random color, which allows me to then select and plug in any color I want on top of it, giving me something that looks very much like….

THIS!  This is the fully colored comic with the lineart and lettering hidden.  I really like the look of some of my comics in this state–just raw color shapes, no real borders–at some point I think I’ll make a comic in this style but that’s neither here nor there.  At this point in the process I’ve selected the color scheme I want and plugged it in.  After the rough colors are done, I move on to…

LIGHTING!  This is where the page really starts to look polished (I hope).  Essentially, I place a layer of dark blue over the entire page at 45% opacity (meaning its see through, allowing some of the original color to come through), and then select the areas where I want light to be and delete those sections from the dark blue.  I then insert a light blue color into those deleted areas, creating a moonlight effect, adding to the atmosphere of the scene.

Anyway, I hope you guys found this even remotely interesting!

FINALLY, after working on this for 8 hours today, it is done!  And technically on time!

This was an ambitious page, but it had better be, or A) this story won’t be what I want it to be and B) I won’t learn anything.  I really tried to flex some perspective and background drawing muscles on this page, and hopefully it shows.  A lot of people commented on the last OF WHAT KIND? story about how each page or group of pages had a color scheme, and I’m trying to keep that up in this story as well.

The big news, of course, is that the intrepid adventurer from the first OF WHAT KIND? story, appears here as well, in a story told by the Principal 1,000 years later.

Anyway, story’s just gettin’ good, some monsters are coming up soon!

OF WHAT KIND & THE BROOD OF THE OUTERFISH

And so it begins!  This is going to be a pretty long story, so there might be some little one-off comic intermissions from time to time, but expect this one to take at least 5 weeks.

Anyway, I’m really happy with this so far and am excited to work on it for awhile.  Fantasy comics seem to really get me going, especially in terms of color and background.  I’m going to be working with a lot of different characters in this one, and an overall story for the OF WHAT KIND comics will begin, only slightly, to emerge.

Also, because of it being in full color, expect there to sometimes be delays.  (Sh)it happens, wear a hat.

I hope you guys liked it, I had a lot of fun drawing it, especially since I was learning all about making pure digital comics in the process.

Here’s page 4!  I’m really happy with this page, even though I’m not sure how easy it is to really see the guy who is lugging Prometheus’ cage away from Mt. Olympus.

Anyway, the last page is coming up on Friday, and then on Monday there shall be the first pages from a new OF WHAT KIND? comic entitled:

“OF WHAT KIND & THE BROOD OF THE OUTERFISH”

Pretty silly name, I know.  I’m already having tons of fun drawing it and it’s going to be good, I think.

It’s Monday, so that means a new comic page for you guys!

This particular Monday is July 26th, which means a birthday for me!  I was born, 23 years before today, at 8:37 in the AM, and as I emerged, a loud, clashing gong sound rang through the world, and all of humanity knew their savior had come.

Or something!
